London: The centuries-old and traditional pub business in Britain is now facing severe financial problems. Last year, the total number of pubs in the whole country fell below 39,000 for the first time. This data was published by the commercial real estate company “Altus Group”, according to which the total number of pubs in England and Wales has decreased to 38,989, some of which are still vacant for rent and some buildings have been converted into other businesses.
According to this data, on average, at least thirty-four pubs are closing every month. Earlier in 2021, pubs across the UK were closing at a rapid pace during the Covid-19 pandemic.
It should be noted that 2021 was a year when this and other businesses suffered a lot due to Covid-19 and rising energy prices.
The latest data comes at a time when consumers are being very careful with their spending due to rising inflation. Several policies will come into effect before the Autumn Budget in April 2025, which are likely to increase the burden on pub owners.
Alex Probin of the Alts Group says that many pub owners are very worried because this may be their last Christmas, as owners will now have to pay more insurance and thus their costs will increase.
