Islamabad: A new petition against the constitutional amendments was filed in the Supreme Court.
The Federal Government, the Speaker of the Assembly, the Chairman of the Senate, and the Ministry of Law have been made parties in the petition.
A new petition against the constitutional amendments has been filed by Advocate Saeem Chaudhry.
The position taken in the petition is that the constitutional amendments should be declared null and void as they contravene the fundamental rights, the constitution, and the independence of the judiciary.
An executive should be restrained from constitutional amendment related to the Judiciary, Article 179 regarding the retirement age of judges should be declared as a basic constitutional structure.
The petition also asked for a declaration that the government cannot interfere with the independence and impartiality of the judiciary.
It should be noted that in an informal conversation with the media two days ago, Federal Law Minister Nazir Tarar had said that the constitutional amendments will be consulted with the coalition parties and the opposition in the next two days.
He had said that lawyers’ organizations have also given their recommendations regarding the constitutional amendments, the work on the constitutional amendments is ongoing, and suggestions have been received from some parties.
