London/Geneva: The court overturned the acquittal of world-renowned Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan, the grandson of Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna, and sentenced him to 3 years in prison.
After these serious allegations came to light, Tariq Ramadan was suspended from teaching by Oxford University, where he had been a professor in the Department of Contemporary Islamic Studies for 12 years.
A Geneva court overturned the acquittal of a 62-year-old Islamic scholar, Professor Tariq Ramadan, on charges of sexual assault and harassment of a new-Muslim Swiss woman in a hotel 16 years ago.
The court also sentenced Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan to 3 years in prison.
It should be noted that last year a lower court had acquitted Tariq Ramadan in this case due to lack of evidence and conflicting testimonies.
After which the victim, as a citizen of Switzerland, filed a case against the acquittal in a Geneva court.
The victim, who is a Muslim, has not been identified but has been given the nickname Bridget and that has become her identity.
The woman had alleged that she had approached Professor Tariq Ramzan in connection with acquiring Islamic teachings and had gone to meet him at a hotel in 2008 at his request.
According to the woman, Professor Tariq Ramzan sexually assaulted her in the hotel and threatened her. Later continued to sexually harass.
Professor Tariq Ramzan can file an appeal against his sentence in the Federal Court.
It should be remembered that being the grandson of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood and then an Islamic scholar, Mazan Tariq was quite popular in Europe and served as a professor at Oxford University.
Apart from this, he has also been giving Islamic lectures throughout the Middle East and Asia, for which he is known to come to these countries.
Time magazine also included him in the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2004, but in 2009, an incident of sexual violence in France hurt his popularity.
Later, by 2000, 4 more French women had accused Tariq Ramadan of sexual assault. After that, in 2018, the case of a Swiss woman came to light.
