LONDON: Non-governmental organizations have accused the British broadcaster of “preventing” the broadcast of an emergency appeal for Gaza.
The BBC is ‘reviewing’ an aid appeal the British broadcaster is said to have made in the face of a possible backlash from supporters of Israel.
Several television channels have expressed their willingness to broadcast an aid appeal for the war-torn Palestinian territory of Gaza.
According to the report of the British newspaper Guardian, the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) associated with UK charities has organized a relief campaign.
The BBC says the campaign introduced by DEC does not meet the criteria for national appeal, but also says it is “under consideration” for broadcast.
Sources linked to DED, the BBC, and aid groups have accused the BBC of blocking the appeal, citing fears of a backlash from supporters of Israel’s war on Hamas.
A senior official of the non-governmental organization said that the organization’s staff is angry with the BBC’s decision.
DEC considers three different criteria while launching an appeal. One of them is that any disaster is of such a scale and nature as to require immediate international assistance.
