KARACHI: Former director of Pakistan Television (PTV) Athar Waqar Azim, who worked with heads of state from Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto to General Pervez Musharraf, passed away in Karachi on Sunday.
Athar Waqar Azim was the son of renowned writer and poet Professor Syed Waqar Azim and younger brother of former MDPTV Akhtar Waqar Azim. His childhood was spent with famous poets Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Habib Jalib as his father used to invite poets and writers to his house for literary gatherings. From the beginning, Athar Waqar had a deep passion for literature.
He joined Pakistan Television as a producer in 1973 and retired as Director Current Affairs in 2006 after 33 years. That is, from PTV’s ‘Black and White’ period to ‘Color TV’, he continued to perform his duties.
Athar Waqar was also a great TV, film and theater actor and a great singer. His professional career has spanned more than 50 years. She was married to renowned TV producer Shireen Azim who produced popular dramas like ‘Un Kahi’.
