London: The Higher Education Commission (HEC), the organization responsible for higher education in Pakistan, is facing serious financial difficulties with international scholarship programs. Regret is also being faced at the global level.
Out of the 3,000 PhD scholars who went abroad in the last 10 years, 99 have stayed abroad instead of returning home. The majority of them did not even deposit the scholarship amount back to the government exchequer under the agreement.
Under a bilateral agreement with the Government of Hungary, 749 BS scholarships were awarded between 2016 and 2024. Out of which 149 have completed their education. However, 600 students are still abroad and completing their studies. HEC has temporarily stopped sending new scholars abroad.
