LAHORE: The Lahore High Court declared the appointment of NADRA Chairman Lt. Gen. Muhammad Munir Afsar invalid and ordered his removal from the post.
On Friday, the Lahore High Court accepted a petition against the appointment of the chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
Justice Asim Hafeez of the High Court pronounced the decision on the petition of Ashba Kamran. In the petition, the federal government and others were made parties.
The petition stated that the caretaker government had approved the appointment of a new chairman by amending the NADRA Act. “Caretaker government cannot interfere in permanent affairs.”
The petitioner requested the court to declare the amendments in the Chairman NADRA and Rules null and void.
On October 2, 2023, the Caretaker Federal Cabinet of Pakistan approved the appointment of serving Army Lt. Gen. Muhammad Munir Afsar as NADRA Chairman.
He was IG Communication and IT at General Headquarters (GHQ) before being appointed Chairman of NADRA.
He took charge of NADRA Chairman Asad Rehman Geelani.
As a Major General, he was also the Director General of DG Command, Control, Communication, Computers and Intelligence (C41) Directorate which is responsible for the overall management of IT. After being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General, he has served as Inspector General of Communication and IT as well as Commander of Pakistan Army Cyber Command.
