French President Macron named former Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier as the new Prime Minister

Paris: French President Macron nominated former Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier as the new Prime Minister.

President Emmanuel Macron has named former EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier as the new prime minister of France after more than 50 days of caretaker government.

Macron held talks at the Elysee Palace on Thursday with the 73-year-old veteran politician tasked with forming a new government in hopes of ending weeks of political deadlock after parliamentary elections. .

The new prime minister will replace 35-year-old Gabriel Atal, who served in the post for just eight months.

Macron’s announcement of parliamentary elections in June proved disastrous. His central coalition lost dozens of seats and no party won a clear majority.
