The Election Commission refused to give a briefing on salaries of members, employees, expenses, and general election expenses

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan has excused itself from giving a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs on the commission’s members, employees’ salaries, expenses, and general election expenses.

The Senate Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs held a meeting under the chairmanship of Humayun Mohmand, in the agenda of which the details of election commission members, employees’ salaries, travel expenses, and February 8 election tributes were sought.

The Secretary Election Commission said in a letter to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs that the Election Commission is an independent constitutional body, not under any ministry, the Election Commission is not under the jurisdiction of the Standing Committee of Parliamentary Affairs, the expenses of the Election Commission are charged expenses.

The letter states that there is no voting in the National Assembly on the budget of the Election Commission, the Election Commission is not bound to provide the requested information to the committee, the Election Commission can assist in legislative matters on election laws and constitutional issues.

Chairman Committee Humayun Mohmand said that the people of the Election Commission say that they are not answerable to the Parliament, they say we are not answerable to the Parliament which created them.
