Karachi: the University of Karachi has canceled the degree of judge of the Sindh High Court.
The Karachi University Syndicate has canceled the degree and enrollment of a High Court judge on the recommendation of its Unfair Men’s (UFM) Committee.
The decision came hours after the arrest of academic and syndicate member Dr Riaz Ahmed, who was picked up by the police in an attempt to prevent him from attending an important meeting. Released when the syndicate decided to cancel the degree.
Speaking to human rights activists and some members of the media after his release, Dr. Riaz claimed in a video statement that Islamabad High Court Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri was involved in the degree issue. This could not be independently confirmed as University of Karachi Vice-Chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi and no university officials were immediately available for comment.
Dr. Riaz claimed that he had already objected to the agenda item related to the case of the judge’s law degree after 40 years in the syndicate meeting on Saturday. Picked up from Sultan Road while he was on his way to the university to attend a meeting, the syndicate later met without Dr Riaz and approved the cancellation of the degree, among other decisions.
