‘Arshad Sharif’s killing was illegal’, Kenya court orders Rs 2 crore to the family

Dawn TV News + Daily Dawn

Kenya: The High Court of Kenya has said that the killing of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif by the police was “unlawful and unconstitutional”.
According to Kenya’s local newspaper, Nairobi Live, on Monday, Justice Stella Mutuku delivered the verdict saying that the killing “violated the right to life, equal interest and protection of law and dignity of a Pakistani citizen.”
The court ordered the Kenyan government to pay one crore shillings (about Rs 2 crore) to Arshad Sharif’s family as compensation.
Arshad Sharif left Pakistan in July 2022 due to fear of arrest. Later in October, news of his death came that he had been killed in Kenya.
On October 23 last year, the Kenyan police confessed to killing Arshad Sharif based on mistaken identity.
Justice Stella Mutoko added in her judgment that the victim was shot based on mistaken identity based on the circumstances described in the case and it has also been confessed.
In his ruling, he also criticized the Attorney General’s Office, the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Policing Oversight Authority for failing to complete investigations and not charge the police officers.
Justice Stella Mutuku ordered the three agencies to complete their investigations and take appropriate action against the officers who shot and killed Arshad Sharif.
