London: Votes are being cast for the general elections in the UK today. Voting for the general elections will start in the morning, there is no holiday in the UK on election day.
More than 4500 candidates are participating in the elections for 650 seats of Parliament. The election race includes candidates from the Independent, Labor Party, Conservative Party, Liberal Democratic Party, Scottish National Party, and other parties. Several British candidates of Pakistani origin are also participating in the election. 15 British Pakistanis were successful in the last British elections.
Of the 650 seats in the United Kingdom, 533 are in England, 40 in Wales, 59 in Scotland, and 18 in Northern Ireland. Polling in the election will continue uninterrupted from 7 am to 10 pm local time. The results will be announced on July 5.
A total of more than 40,000 polling stations have been set up for polling. In the British elections, 50 million voters will exercise their right to vote. For the first time in the UK, it will be mandatory to show identification to vote. Any party needs at least 326 seats to form the government. The newly elected members of parliament will take oath on July 9.
Elections in the UK were supposed to be held in January 2025, but Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sonak announced early elections after several cabinet members resigned.
