Anti-Islamic crimes double in Germany, report

Dawn TV News + Daily Dawn

BERLIN: Germany has seen a marked increase in incidents of discrimination against Muslims and Islamophobia, while anti-Semitism has also seen a rise in reaction.

A report by a non-governmental organization has revealed that in Germany in 2022 there were about 1,000 reported cases of Islamophobia, but in 2023 this number will double to more than 2,000.

The report states that anti-Muslim crimes in Germany have never been more acceptable and this attitude has changed since the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

According to the report, Muslims were subjected to physical violence in 4 instances of murder, 5 cases of property arson, and 178 incidents of Islamophobia.

The most common crimes the Muslim community faced were verbal attacks or insults. Then there are incidents of discrimination, intimidation, and coercion.

A report published in Germany itself stated that anti-Semitic crimes in 2023 were also a reaction to Islamophobia.
