Edinburgh: Scotland has decided to release more than 500 prisoners after the capacity in the prisons is reduced, the release of the prisoners will start from today.
Scotland’s Secretary for Law and Justice announced last month that the release of prisoners due to lack of capacity in prisons will be implemented from today.
The head of the prison department has said that the number of prisoners in the prisons has exceeded the capacity due to which the state will not be able to pay the basic rights of the prisoners.
According to the Secretary for Law and Justice, in the first phase, the release of those prisoners who were sentenced to less than four years and their sentence is completed within the next 6 months will be implemented.
The release of these prisoners will start from today while the process of release of around five hundred prisoners will be completed periodically in the next few weeks.
According to a spokesperson for the Scottish Prison Service, the release of the prisoners was decided and announced after consultation with all stakeholders and relevant agencies.
Scotland’s prisons have a capacity of 8,007 inmates, compared to 8,348 inmates last month.
The Scottish government’s decision to release convicted prisoners has been criticized by social circles.
Victim Support Scotland, an organization for victims of crime, said that in the past when prisoners were released in this way, 40% of them re-offended within six months of their release. They were punished, and the same situation is likely to happen this time.
