LONDON: Britain’s Labor Party has announced that if it succeeds in forming a government, it will recognize a Palestinian state to advance a new peace process in the Middle East.
The Labor Party is far ahead of its rivals in opinion polls for the July 4 British election.
The manifesto of the Labor Party states that a Palestinian state is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people.
“We are committed to contributing to a new peace process, recognizing Palestine, leading to a two-state solution in which a secure Israel and an independent and sovereign Palestinian state coexist.”
The current Conservative Party government previously said it would formally recognize a Palestinian state before the peace process.
The government had said that “Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza should be provided with a credible Palestinian state and a political perspective for a new future.”
In May this year, Ireland, Norway, and Spain officially recognized the state of Palestine.
Israel reacted angrily to the actions of these countries.
The seven-month-long war in Gaza has left Israel feeling increasingly isolated.
