Paris: 32-year-old Reema Hasan has been elected as a member of the European Parliament. She represents the French left-wing party La France Insomités (LFI).

According to Dawn TV, the human rights activist, lawyer and refugee advocate is the first French citizen of Palestinian heritage to be elected as a member of the European Union Parliament, marking a milestone in the young politician’s career.

He has gained significant popularity thanks to his activism for Gaza during the Israeli occupation. However, Rima Hasan’s successful election to the European Parliament comes at a time when far-right parties have won seats across the continent, particularly in France, Belgium and Germany.

The LFI won 9.9 percent of the vote, while the far-right National Front Party won more than 31 percent.

The European Parliament is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and usually passes laws.

Rima Hassan was born in the Palestinian camp of Nirab near Aleppo, Syria, which was established between 1948 and 1950 after the events of the Nakba. In the Nakba, the Zionist armed groups expelled about 750,000 Palestinians from the area. Depriving them of their homes and properties, they were forcibly displaced.

Rima Hasan arrived in France at the age of nine. They had no country. His family belonged to the village of Albarwa, 10 and a half kilometers east of Akka in present-day northern Israel. She became a French citizen in 2010 when she turned 18.

He graduated in international law from the renowned Sorbonne University in Paris. He wrote a thesis on legal comparisons in South Africa and Israel, dealing with racial discrimination. She was also included in the Forbes France Women of the Year 2023 list.
