MOSCOW: Moscow has relaxed regulations covering applications for foreign nationals applying for citizenship, and headscarves and hijabs will be allowed in passport photos, the Russian Interior Ministry said.
According to the report of the Russian broadcasting agency “RT”, the new law will come into force ten days after its publication, i.e. from May 5.
“In cases where the applicant’s religious beliefs do not allow them to appear before strangers without a head covering, head coverings may be provided in photographs that do not obscure the oval of the face,” the document said.
According to the report, photographs with scarves that fully or partially obscure the applicant’s chin will not be accepted.
Authorities already allow Russian citizens to use photographs in hijab when applying for passports, driving licenses, work permits, and patents.
“The new laws will allow the practice of religious traditions, while also ensuring the security of the state, as the face, like other data, is needed,” Beasultan Khamzayev, a member of the State Duma’s security and anti-corruption committee, told the Russian Parliamentary Gazette. is so that video monitoring systems can identify a person.’
