Malappuram: “All together, all progress and all trust” is the slogan of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, but the party has given a ticket to only one Muslim in this national election.
The Hindu nationalist party Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Professor Abdus Salam as its candidate from Malappuram, a Muslim-majority district in Kerala, in this year’s general elections. Professor Abdus Salam is an educationist and former Vice Chancellor of Kerala University.
Malappuram is a Muslim-majority constituency, with 70% of the population being Muslims. This constituency has been the stronghold of the Indian Union Muslim League. Since 1952, the candidate of the Muslim League has won all the elections except once.
