Aligarh: For the first time in the 100-year history of Aligarh Muslim University, a Muslim woman has been appointed as the head, and Professor Naima Khatun has been appointed as the university’s vice-chancellor.
According to a British media report, this is the first time in the last 100 years that a Muslim woman has been appointed Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Earlier in 1920, Begum Sultan Jahan was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of AMU.
Prof. Naima Khatun is the current Principal of Women’s College at AMU and has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of AMU after getting approval from President Draupadi Murmu.
According to the report, the election code of conduct is in force in India, therefore approval was also sought from the Election Commission before the appointment of Professor Naima Khatun, after which an official notification has been issued.
The text of the notification reads that Naima Khatun, principal of Women’s College, has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of AMU for five years.
The Election Commission of India has said that it has no objection from the point of view of the election code of conduct to the proposal regarding the appointment of AMU Vice-Chancellor provided that no political advantage is taken from it.
It should be noted that the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College established in 1875 was renamed Aligarh Muslim University in 1920. It was in 1920 that Begum Sultan Jahan was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of AMU.
Begum Sultan Jahan, who belonged to the royal family of Bhopal, was appointed the Vice-Chancellor of AMU in 100 years, after which Prof. Naima was the first woman to hold the post.
