Maldives: The party of the President of Maldives, Muhammad Muizhu, has won the control of the Parliament with a huge majority in the elections. The results showed that voters supported his tilt towards China and avoided India.
According to the French news agency AFP, the People’s National Congress (PNC), the party of President Mohamed Moizou, won more than two-thirds of the votes in the 93-member parliament.
According to preliminary results, People’s National Congress won 66 out of 86 votes. The official validation of the results will take a week and the new assembly will function from early May.
The election was seen as a turning point for closer economic cooperation with China.
The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which had an overwhelming majority in parliament, won only 12 seats.
According to Reuters, the British news agency, President Muhammad Moeizu, who was elected last year, pledged to end the country’s ‘India First’ policy, which has strained relations.
His government asked the Indian military personnel posted in the country to leave the country.
Critics said the Maldives could grow closer to China.
His ruling People’s National Congress had urged the electorate to choose a party that would quickly deliver on its promises.
