Washington: Every year, millions of Indians from India go to America for work or education, but then settle there permanently and take citizenship. At present, after Mexico, India is the second largest country with the highest number of US citizens.
The latest report of the US Congress also states that at least 65,960 Indians have officially become US citizens by getting green cards.
According to the independent Congressional Research Service, 9,69,380 people became naturalized US citizens in fiscal year 2022, according to the ‘US Naturalization Policy’ report. It was reported that “people from Mexico had the highest number of naturalized citizens. They were followed by people from India, the Philippines, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.”
A congressional report stated that in 2022, 1,28,878 Mexican citizens received US citizenship. After that, 65,960 Indians became US citizens. 53,413 from the Philippines, 46,913 from Cuba, 34,525 from the Dominican Republic, 33,246 from Vietnam, and 27,038 from China obtained US citizenship.
The report states that 16 million of the foreign-born US citizens in 2023 were of Mexican origin. After that, 2.8 million people came from India. In third place were 2.2 million Chinese citizens who were born in China but became US citizens. There are 4.9 million people in the US who are Indian or have Indian roots.
