Jeneva: The United Nations World Environment Organization (UNEP) has said that on the one hand, 783 million people around the world are suffering from hunger, while on the other hand, 20% of food is wasted globally.
According to the latest UNEP data in the United Nations report, 1.05 billion tons (about 19 percent) of food was wasted at retailers, out-of-home food establishments, and at home in 2022. The report states that Households are the largest food waste in the world, with an annual volume of 63.1 million tonnes, accounting for about 60% of total food waste, followed by 180 million from eating out and shopping, respectively. And 13.1 million tons of food is wasted. It was further reported that each person wastes an average of 79 kg of food annually, which can provide 1.3 meals per day to each person affected by hunger.
