Pakistani resolution passed in United Nations to deal with Islamophobia

New York: After the International Day of Islamophobia (March 15), which was approved during the Prime Ministership of Imran Khan, the United Nations General Assembly has passed a Pakistani resolution with a large majority, in the context of growing Islamophobia against Muslims. A concrete action has been called for to end the ongoing violence. Titled ‘Measures to combat Islamophobia’, this resolution was approved by 113 votes while 44 countries did not participate in the voting. Those included India and most of the European countries. In this resolution presented by Pakistan, the Secretary General of the United Nations is also requested to appoint a special envoy to combat Islamophobia. Day (March 15) was presented on the occasion. The resolution to celebrate it as an international day was also presented by Pakistan. Before the resolution was passed, the 193-member assembly rejected two amendments proposed by a group of European countries. The resolution states that despite acknowledging the prevalence of Islamophobia, Muslims around the world still face discrimination. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Munirakaram said on this occasion that Islamophobia has existed since the beginning of Islam, it is born from deep fear and prejudice. After the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York and Washington, Islamophobia spread rapidly.
He said that the General Assembly approved a resolution on Islamophobia two years ago, but there has been a significant increase in Islamophobia, discrimination, bigotry, and violence against Muslims and their beliefs. Welcoming the approval, he said that the first priority of the state is to fight extremist ideas.
